Looking to work for a start-up but also have stability?  Our client is ranked on the Wall Street Journal’s 2012 Top 50 Venture-Backed Companies.  As a SQL Server DBA you will provide application level, administrative, and logistical support for MS SQL 2005/2008 and other databases as necessary. Manages database deployments, troubleshooting, performance tuning, and daily operations. Provides assistance to the development staff and performs database maintenance support.

Key Responsibilities of the SQL Server DBA:

  • Deploy and manage schema releases, metadata releases, and other database-related implementation and deployment into production environments.

  • Monitors and troubleshoots production issues including performance, backup/recovery, data archiving, SQL Server replication, bulk copy processes, and all other production-related data movement processes.

  • Assist with migration of key data services to new data center.

  • Assists Business Users with query formulation as needed, and manages report deployment into MS Reporting Services or other similar reporting infrastructure.

  • Troubleshoots data-related issues with legacy Business Objects reporting databases.

  • Create and manage processes to refresh pre-production load testing database environments on a regular basis.

  • Provides feedback on the physical database design to engineering and data architect as needed or appropriate.

  • Assists with the creation of standards and procedures, and enforces standards and procedures in production.  Provides guidelines for accessing corporate databases by the development staff and end-users.

  • Prepares space utilization, capacity planning, uptime reports, and performance tuning reports as needed.

  • Provides on-call support for database problems.

  • Troubleshoots and performs necessary tuning to enhance performance, and channels performance tuning information back into the development process.

  • Perform daily tasks related to databases in all environments.

  • Familiar with, or willing to learn, MySQL and other database platforms.




Job Requirements

Minimum Job Requirements of the SQL Server DBA:

  • 3+ years as a Microsoft SQL Server DBA

  • 2+ years as a DBA supporting a high volume transactional production environment

  • Bachelor's degree (B. A. or computer technology) from four-year college or university; or three to five years related experience and/or training in database administration with any common database platform

  • Must possess excellent T-SQL coding skills for ad-hoc request and data layer requirements

  • Must have transactional replication experience

Desired Skill Sets Requirements of the SQL Server DBA:

  • Data warehouse or large-scale data analytics experience a plus.

  • MS Analysis Services, MS Reporting Services, or equivalent experience with similar technologies a plus.

  • Microsoft Certified Database Administrator (MCDBA) certification preferred, but not required.

  • SQL Server 2008 Clustering experience preferred, but not required.

  • Dell Equal logic SAN knowledge a plus.

  • Business Objects prior knowledge or experience a plus.

  • Willing to learn MySQL, Vertica, and other database platforms as needed and adopted into the data services architecture.

  • Experience with both Windows Server and Linux a plus.


This SQL Server database administrator opportunity is direct hire with one of our clients in Durham, NC, with a target salary range of $75,000 - $110,000. No sponsorship available. Evening or weekend work may be necessary to meet deadlines or solve specific problems. Strong preference for local candidates.
