Purpose of Job

The Optical Design Engineer is responsible for the design and optimization of optical systems by application of basic principles of optics in conjunction with an optical design CAE Software. Responsibilities also include concept design, optical analysis, design optimization, tolerance variation studies, refining final design based on analytical results, DFM considerations, Optical performance assessment on physical parts; including analyzing inspection data, performing root-cause analysis, preparation of 5-Phase/5-Why analysis reports as needed, preparation of engineering reports, technical presentation material, and delivering department-specific presentations to internal and external customers.

Major Duties/Responsibilities

  • Design and optimize optical components for head-up display backlight unit and other related optical product solutions.
  • Design and optimize A-Spherical surface for a concave mirror using Ptical CAE Software, to meet customer requirements for optical performance.
  • Perform non-sequential analysis to confirm stray light reflections from the head-up display or other related product solutions.
  • Define Optical design parameters as necessary for manufacturing of optical components.
  • Support internal teams in creation of 3D Models and 2D drawings including GD&T for all optical components considering DFM/DFA factors and assembly, cost, material & component specifications, and other design factors.
  • Maintain open issues related to design developments during various stages of the development phase and develop contingency plans as needed.
  • Conduct optical design and simulation using light simulation software, such as SPEOS, Light Tools, ZEMAX and CODE-V.
  • Design and develope Optical solutions towards new business opportunities and advance developement projects.
  • Provide technical / design support during the pre-production phase (PV testing, root-cause analysis, 5-Phase report preparation), during Production Preparation Phase (Quality, Assembly, Process related areas) as is relates to IPC and HUD Optics.
  • Manage customer design changes and reflect to internal design deliverables and documentation.
  • Interface with customer(s) to understand design requirements during the design specification/packaging development, and product development phases.
  • Prepare Concepts and supporting data to meet optical performance requirements.
  • Support the development of conceptual design, design feasibility studies for the RFQ response and technical presentations.
  • Lead the development of DFMEA, Failure Analysis related to optical performance.
  • Participate in customer reviews and translate customer requests into defining optical design specifications.
  • Perform benchmark analysis, attend trade shows, and compile market trend analysis of optical design trends for HUD optics.
  • Validate optical systems and achieve correlation to simulation models.
  • Prepare technical documents in support of the optical design qualification for approval.
  • Develope Optical Design standards and operating procedures as related to Optical design.

Education, Experience and Knowledge

Required and/or preferred level of education, knowledge and skills that are necessary.Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Optical Engineering or Physics with specialization in optics; Master’s Degree in Mechanical, Optical Engineering or Physics with specialization in optics preferred
Related Experience
  • 1-6 years of automotive optical design & development experience.
  • CAD Knowledge – CATIA / UG required.
  • Knowledge of HUD optics preferred.
  • Knowledge of Sequential and Non-Sequential ray tracing is required.
  • Tolerance and sensitivity analysis of the optical system is preferred.
  • Experience in Optical analysis tolls required, preferably in Zemax, CODE-V, SPEOS or light tools.
  • Ability to read, write, and speak in Japanese preferred.
  • Strong competency in all aspects of optics and optical component study and design related to similar products.
Special Training or Competency
  • Proven technical design and analysis experience in Optics/lens design. .
  • Demonstation of innovative past optical design solutions or experience.

Additional Information
Work HoursMonday-Friday, 8 am – 5pm. Off-hours as needed.Travel Requirements

10% international and/or domestic.

If domestic travel is necessary, valid drivers’ license is required.
