Application Developer Analyst

Job Description

The Applications Developer Analyst provides input and support and performs full systems life cycle management activities (e.g., audits, analyses, provides technical requirements, design, coding, testing, and implementation of systems and applications software, etc.). He/She participates in component and data architecture design, technology planning, and testing for Applications Development (AD) initiatives to meet business requirements. This position provides business information to support reporting groups, planning groups, and senior management decision-making. He/She provides input to applications development project plans and integrations. The Applications Developer Analyst collaborates with teams and supports emerging technologies to ensure effective communication and achievement of objectives. He/She provides subject-matter expertise and support for applications development, integration, and maintenance. This position provides input to department and project teams on decisions supporting projects.

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Responsible for the coordination and facilitation of work sessions to gather relevant information and to ensure understanding of the audience's knowledge
  • Analyzes, comprehends, and applies the appropriate level of details to ensure solutions satisfy business problems and opportunities
  • Participates in defining and developing technical specifications to meet systems’ requirements
  • Analyzes and translates logical designs to create elegant, adaptable design solution
  • Analyzes, designs, codes, tests, corrects, and documents moderate to highly complex programs to ensure optimal performance and compliance
  • Reviews and understands specifications to achieve coding tasks
  • Defines and administers procedures to monitor systems performance and integrity
  • Performs applications maintenance and support functions to support problem resolution
  • Performs development of highly complex queries, stored procedures and views using SQL, Power BI, and other tools
  • Applies best practices for performance tuning, query optimization and modular coding techniques to improve efficiencies in production and user experience
  • Conducts systems and requirements analyses to identify project action items
  • Creates task lists and cost and time estimates to support project plan development
  • Reviews technology trends (e.g., periodicals, internet research, department staff consultations, etc.) to increase application development expertise
  • Participates in UPS company activities (e.g., clubs, committees, etc.) to foster personal and professional development and to enhance professional marketability
  • Monitors the industry to gain knowledge and understanding of emerging technologies
  • Identifies new and emerging hardware and software technologies and products to maintain industry competitiveness
  • Assists user group with technical needs to support set-ups and testing
  • Communicates with user groups during the project life cycle to prepare for correcting testing conclusions
  • Audits and analyzes raw data from external sources to support CSS staff and application users
  • Researches and locates valid data sources for customer reporting needs to pull specific data for analysis and to determine business and customer trends

Knowledge and Skills

  • Demonstrates some advanced knowledge of database design principles; works with users to define requirements with minimal oversight from others; defines user rights; describes security measures, such as passwords, firewalls, and access rights based on user requirements; describes information organization, such as classes, links, records, and fields
  • Demonstrates basic knowledge of theories supporting disaster recovery planning; demonstrates understanding of continuance plan for own application or function; executes existing disaster recovery plans in case of outage; escalates issues if critical applications are at risk
  • Demonstrates knowledge of the existence of foundation architecture standards; supports the need to adhere to standards; knows who to ask for information and guidance
  • Identifies key information sources, assesses information quality, and understands and communicates limitations; relates and compares information from different sources; manages large amounts of data and appropriately applies data reduction and exploratory analysis techniques; makes logical assumptions; challenges own findings and documents process and outcomes; audits own analyses and determines their validity
  • Demonstrates an understanding of the strategy, structures, processes and procedures of the enterprise in its relationship with the business and its activities; identifies business representatives affected by information systems with some assistance
  • Understands UPS products, services, and internal systems: asks appropriate questions to gain clear understanding of system issues; documents and clearly communicate system issues to appropriate groups (e.g. Information Services, User Reps, TSG, system users, etc.)
  • Analyzes business processes; identifies alternative solutions, assesses feasibility, and recommends new approaches, typically seeking to exploit technology components. Evaluates the financial, cultural, technological, organizational and environmental factors which must be addressed in the change program
  • Independently performs duties associated with the full software life-cycle, both interface and database systems; gathers input from multiple sources with some guidance; performs analyses, designs, codes, tests, and documents moderate to highly complex applications software
  • Assists with application of new technologies for solving business information needs. Supports new technologies. Maintains basic understanding of potential risks and rewards with emerging technologies
  • Assists with the implementation of agreed upon problem remedies and preventative measures
  • Demonstrates an understanding of basic project planning processes, including planning action items and resources
  • Identifies and evaluates risks; determines and applies appropriate risk treatment(s)
  • Captures and disseminates technical and business information. Facilitates the business change decision-making processes and the planning and implementation of change
  • Conducts root cause analysis and diagnoses and manages technical problems using pre-defined steps, limited experience, and available tools
  • Recognizes the basic impact of technology on UPS business, services, and processes; identifies technological barriers in achieving desired objectives; maintains appropriate breadth and depth of technological knowledge for current work assignment
  • 2 years' SQL experience - Preferred
  • Proficient in coding - Preferred
  • Bachelor's Degree in Data Science/Software Development or related field - Preferred
  • Possesses experience with data graphic visualization techniques preferably with Oracle Cloud product offerings - Preferred
  • Ability to effectively communicate with technical database teams as well as accounting teams and serve as liaison between the groups - Preferred
