BIA Sr Apps Developer Analyst

Job Description

The Senior Database Developer Analyst provides data for UPS and Supply Chain Solutions managerial, financial, and operational reporting. He/She performs database back-end development to create applications for UPS department users. This position is responsible for Business Information Analysis (BIA) department database administration, designing and implementing databases, creating and designing reports, performing data source analysis, and resolving data issues. The Senior Database Developer Analyst ensures applications can access correct data through processes by preparing data and creating data tables. He/She ensures data requests are clear, determines available data, demonstrates how to use and understand data, and maintains consistent data standards.

The Senior Database Developer Analyst leads development and provides mentoring in highly complex queries, stored procedures and views using SQL as well as ETL processes to support the development process. He/She applies best practices for performance tuning, query optimization and modular coding techniques to improve efficiencies in production and user experience. This position provides technical leadership and mentoring to database analyst team members to increase knowledge of technologies and processes. The Senior Database Developer Analyst analyzes project requirements and customers’ expectations to identify and implement required tasks. He/She researches, recommends, and utilizes system software and tools to investigate problems, to monitor performance, and to create reports.

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Analyzes data requirements to establish, modify, and maintain objects and data models
  • Creates database standards and best practices for monitoring compliance to ensure conformity and smooth transition of database staff duties
  • Identifies and assesses issues to communicate potential risks and impacts
  • Develops SQL server backup and recovery strategies to create back-up plans for critical databases and to ensure strategies support growth and changes for data needs
  • Drafts and maintains database procedures and documentation to ensure process integrity and consistency
  • Communicates with requestors to ensure expectations are met and data is usable
  • Develops and executes test plans to verify and validate delivered data
  • Analyzes performance and historical data to identify trends, to implement solutions, and to avoid adverse business impacts

Knowledge and Skills

  • Applies Database Knowledge: Demonstrates some advanced knowledge of database design principles; works with users to define requirements with minimal oversight from others; defines user rights; describes security measures, such as passwords, firewalls, and access rights based on user requirements; describes information organization, such as classes, links, records, and fields
  • Applies Information Systems Knowledge: Demonstrates an understanding of the strategy, structures, processes and procedures of the enterprise in its relationship with the business and its activities; identifies business representatives affected by information systems with some assistance
  • Applies IT Security Knowledge: Enforces security policies and procedures by administering and monitoring data security profiles; investigates possible security violations; demonstrates understanding of the use of firewalls and encryption routines; educates others about security policies
  • Applies System Tools and Utilities Knowledge: Demonstrates proficiency in the use of at least one system tool or utility, as well as working knowledge of several other types of tools or utilities; develops, administers, and/or supports systems with limited assistance; measures the capabilities of individual tools to satisfy development or support needs
  • Detail  Orientation: Distinguishes between “big picture” concepts and comments and specialized, smaller specific facts associated with work; notes the specifics of events and experiences; explains, in general, how details impact end goals or outcomes; ensures that work is completed accurately and with the appropriate level of detail
  • Report Generation: Generates reports in appropriate format using basic software; reviews reports to ensure accuracy and completeness; identifies issues with report generation (e.g., missing variables, incorrect data, etc.)
  • Small Package Operations Knowledge: Demonstrates a detailed understanding of processes, procedures, and methods within small package operations; demonstrates a broad knowledge of tools, equipment, and technology used in small package operations; identifies root causes of recurring issues; describes the general structure of small package operations
  • SQL or DBA certifications - Preferred
  • Experience with Red Gate Tools - Preferred
