Location: Hickory,NC
M-F, 8 AM-5 PM

The candidate should be open to working overtime if required.


Scope of Position:
Development of adhesive dispensing systems for optical fiber ribbons
Technical leadership including understanding and evaluation of different approaches
Drive internal development and/or engage with external vendors
Demonstrate new technologies and processes using prototypes


Day to Day Responsibilities:
Lead/drive smaller projects in support of product/process development activities
Understand technology challenges and define requirements of technical solutions, especially details of adhesive dispensing
Engage with third party suppliers to define project needs, understand their technical capabilities, and evaluate them as development options
Propose and define internal development options
Compare all options, evaluate them and propose best solution
Support mechanical and/or controls design during prototype phase
Support development of data acquisition and automation control equipment
Analyze test data and document results in technical internal reports
Documentation of test procedures, experiment plans, and process changes
Failure analysis and root cause identification for components and assemblies
Participate in teams to solve problems and improve processes using structured problem-solving methods and statistical tools
Collaborate with both internal and external resources to leverage expertise


Required Skills:
Understanding of thin film liquid coating technology
Ability to engage with outside engineering firms and define statements of work
Mechanical design and CAD expertise.
Basic project management
Process design and validation
Hands-on assembly, testing, and troubleshooting of prototype systems


Desired Skills:
Advanced knowledge of industrial ink jet printing
Understanding of optical fiber and related communications systems
Programming skills for automated data acquisition and image processing using software such as LabVIEW and MATLAB
Experience with automation control utilizing Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs)
Familiarity with optical connectors and related cable assemblies


Education and Experience:
B.S. in mechanical design or optical design (or equivalent), advanced degrees are preferred
5 years of relevant experience


Soft Skills (Communication/Team/Leadership)
Self-motivated to deliver results with minimal supervision
Communicates effectively (verbal and written) to all levels
Ability to multitask and balance short / long term priorities
Organized with good planning and time management skills
Works effectively and builds relationships with global cross functional teams

Scientific curiosity and innovative mindset
