The Office of Dissemination (ODISS) performs portfolio management for all NWS Dissemination Services. The Office is responsible for portfolio management of the operation, and maintenance of NWS IT systems, infrastructure, and services throughout the Nation including: planning, development, acquiring, monitoring, maintenance, system upgrades, consolidation, termination, and expansion whether directly or through NWS field offices and contract support. The Office is responsible for integration and planning of new dissemination requirements-driven technologies for performance enhancement and cost effectiveness. The Office is also responsible for managing and overseeing operations of select dissemination systems. The GIS Development Team of the ODISS maintains an enterprise Geographic Information Systems (GIS) dissemination system, establishes standards, and allows for consistent dissemination formats and protocols across all NOAA geospatial data and products.
We are seeking GIS Specialists to perform a variety of scientific programming and data processing assignments supporting the Office of Dissemination with forecast products. Candidates must have solid GIS background; good communication skills, and an understanding of meteorological data and forecasts. These positions will support the GIS Development Team of the Office of Dissemination (ODISS) of the National Weather Service (NWS). The positions are located in Silver Spring, Maryland and candidates are expected to work within the core work hours of 6 AM to 6 PM Monday thru Friday.
- Work with Office of Dissemination scientists to develop software and leverage existing algorithms developed by the NWS to support Impact-based Decision Support Services (IDSS)
- Enable all NWS GIS map-based applications to use the same GIS map view framework to provide a consistent user experience for NWS data using GIS presentation layers on a scalable web-based map that can be used by existing applications across geographic and NWS services areas
- Develop GIS services supporting flood inundation mapping, excessive rainfall products, and quantitative precipitation forecasts for the initial release of the GIS viewer
