Industrial Engineer- Flexible Location

Job Description

The Solutions Design Implementation (SOLDI) Engineering Supervisor creates and provides customized engineering solutions for UPS customers and generates non-package revenues. He/she strengthens customer relationships by enabling UPS to be a single-source provider of transportation and supply chain related needs and consulting. This position requires travel. The Solutions Design Implementation (SOLDI) Engineering Supervisor manages various types of engineering projects, provides subject matter expertise, and interfaces with SOLDI team members and customer-facing counterparts.

The Solutions Design Implementation (SOLDI) Engineering Supervisor designs, develops, and implements Engineering solutions that help the customers efficiently distribute and transport their products. He/she creates consulting proposals and work orders outlining proposed project tasks and deliverables. This position includes gathering data, making operational observations, and interviewing customers to determine their needs and identify possible solutions. The Solutions Design Implementation (SOLDI) Engineering Supervisor works on site and interviews, observes, analyzes, and redesigns supply chain processes utilizing software and other analytical tools. He/She is responsible for analyzing client order, SKU, other operational data and equipment that supports recommended solutions ultimately outlining cost justification, final deliverables and added value.

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Manages project lifecycles, including project scope, resources, schedule, initiation, start-up/design, and implementation
  • Develops project plans (i.e., detailed plan, milestones, and work breakdown structures) and assigns tasks to resources to ensure that the project will be completed on time and according to specifications
  • Researches and evaluates industry trends and best practices to enhance UPS's ability to meet and exceed customer expectations and provide leading edge solutions
  • Develops personal industry knowledge and expertise (e.g., reads technical and industry journals, browses the internet, attends seminars, etc.) to remain current with the industry and the latest technologies
  • Enters daily activities into project administration tools to create time sheets, expense reports, calendar entries, and project files
  • Forwards project documents to stakeholders to obtain sign-off, agreement on project costs, and needed resources
  • Reports on project status, field resource activity, and training initiatives to keep senior management informed of progress and developments
  • Follows up with resources to monitor the productivity of the team, project timelines, and deliverables
  • Participates in sales meetings and conference calls to share information and provide training on new developments
  • Provides on-going feedback and support to improve performance

  • Applies Service, Product, and Customer Technology Knowledge: Demonstrates familiarity with the core service offerings across business units and deep familiarity with product, service, and customer facing technology offerings of at least one business unit; demonstrates knowledge of competitors' offerings and the features of their products, services, and customer facing technology solutions; describes types of customers that would benefit from selected offerings; compares and contrasts UPS's and competitor's products, services, and customer facing technology solutions; able to compare and contrast the customer's experience of engaging with UPS and primary competitors across all touch-points; summarizes positive and negative gaps; develops plans to leverage advantages and correct disadvantages
  • Assesses Business Needs: Identifies current and future needs of the customer or business; understands how business needs dictate the project’s requirements, project direction, business objectives, and resource allocation; makes recommendations on the solutions-design phase of the project
  • Business, Financial, and Industry Knowledge: Considers industry and financial trends when making account decisions; understands critical aspects of business models and operating structures to provide input into decisions
  • Designs/Develops Integrated Solutions to Business Problems: Demonstrates a basic understanding of a business problem; recommends a solution to solve the business problem
  • Project Management: Develops project management plans and leads the implementation for basic projects of short duration requiring limited coordination and resources; supports initiatives with well-defined project needs and cross-functional roles/responsibilities throughout the project life cycle; manages minimal organizational resistance to cross-functional project demands; employs project management tools and technology (e.g., Microsoft Project, Program Management Group website, etc.) appropriately
  • Supply Chain Management: Demonstrates a detailed understanding of supply chain concepts; makes recommendations for changes to solve supply chain problems
  • Technical Writing: Uses the appropriate style, level of detail, grammar, and organization of thought in technical writing; drafts standard specialized or technical documents using templates and job aids; considers the end-user’s perspective when creating technical documents
  • Must have experience using Microsoft Office Suite or equivalent software
  • Must be able to travel
  • Bachelor's Degree in Industrial Engineering, Industrial & Systems Engineering, Operations Research - Preferred
  • Experience with Process analysis and redesign - Preferred
  • Experience with Supply Chain Logistics - Preferred
  • Experience with Database management - Preferred
  • Experience using Computer Assisted Design (CAD) Software - Preferred
  • Experience with Six Sigma and/or Lean methodologies - Preferred
  • Ability to work from a virtual location - Preferred
