TEKsystems is seeking a well rounded Network Engineer to support an industry leader in Networking Technology. This team was created in the aftermath of 9/11 to deliver rapid-response technical support to the federal, state, and local government. Our customer now has the capability to support global governments. Part of their mission is being 'ready to help all critical services, including financial institutions, healthcare, and others that play a critical role in a peaceful world.
There are 30 network engineers that currently make up the Operations team, where they provide support to their Federal and SLED customers. There are 5 specialties or disciplines that these 30 engineers fall into. While each discipline has SME, every engineer is encouraged to work with their peers, participate in trainings, and utilize labs to grow in other technologies.

The role of this network engineer is for a Route/Switch Network Engineer to provide 3rd level support via phone, email, web, and remote access of Cisco products to customers. The successful candidate should have experience with Layer 1 and 2 devices and routing protocols such as BGP and OSPF. The ideal candidate demonstrates an aptitude and appetite for learning complex network technologies in a dynamic and fast-paced environment.
Role & Responsibilities
Provides second/third level technical support for Cisco routing and switching technologies to the customers.
Applies analytical skills and technical knowledge to solve product and network problems of moderate to high complexity.
Provides technology/product training and intellectual property material as required
Acts as focal point for large account network problem resolution.
Effectively utilizes moderate to complex lab setups to recreate and solve problems
Submits complete and correct bug reports in area of expertise.
Interacts across development teams at peer level.
CCNA or CCNP certification
Routing/Switching - Strong Analytical and troubleshooting skills with Routing/Switching across Cisco platforms.
Demonstrated proficiency in the following technologies: Spanning Tree, DHCP, TCP/IP, Routing Protocols (OSPF, RIP, EIGRP, BGP), QoS, Multicast, MPLS, VLAN and VTP, Etherchannel, VSS, SPAN / RSPAN
Ability to handle critical customer issues/problems.
Able to determine problems and deliver known solutions with a high level of customer satisfaction.
Ability to determine root cause and resolution for previously unknown problems.
Good verbal communication skills.
Typically requires BS in a technical field (CS/EE preferred) or equivalent plus 2-3 years related Networking industry experience.
The day-to-day responsibilities are broken into two parts:
1) 50% of the day (4 hrs) will be spent taking customer calls for support that fall within the network monitoring space. This will be operational and reactive. As cases come in, this person will work them to resolution according to priority level.
2) 50% of their day (4 hrs) will be spent working backlogs (cases that have accumulated and need to be resolved).
The engineers day typically consists 2-3 new issues per day and 10-15 cases in their backlog. This is a stark contrast to the TAC, where they typically have 50 cases in their backlog.
All of these will require some combination of the following: troubleshooting, scheduling meetings with vendors and/or customers, recreating the incident and working the case in a the lab, or working collaboratively with other engineers.
This role is not help desk. This person will be doing higher level troubleshooting that requires the SME to be very technical, working with multi-vendor, integrated solutions.
