The Optical Design Engineer is responsible for the design and optimization of optical systems by application of basic principles of optics in conjunction with an optical design CAE Software. Responsibilities also include completing optical studies, analyzing inspection data, performing root-cause analysis, preparation of 5-Phase/5-Why analysis reports as needed, preparation of engineering reports, technical presentation material, and delivering department-specific presentations to internal and external customers.Major Duties/Responsibilities

•Design and optimize optical components for head-up display backlight unit.
•Design and optimize A-Spherical surface for a concave mirror, using customer requirements for optical performance.
•Perform non-sequential analysis to confirm stray light reflections from the head-up display.
•Define manufacturing specifications for optical components.
•Support internal teams in creation of 3D Models and 2D drawings including GD&T for all optical components considering DFM/DFA factors and assembly, cost, material & component specifications, and other design factors.
•Maintain open issues related to design developments during various stages of the development phase and develop contingency plans as needed.
•Conduct optical design and simulation using light simulation software, such as SPEOS, Light Tools, ZEMAX and CODE-V.
•Ensure accurate meeting minutes are recorded and tracked for all customer related meetings.
•Provide technical / design support during the pre-production phase (PV testing, root-cause analysis, 5-Phase report preparation), during Production Preparation Phase (Quality, Assembly, Process related areas) as is relates to IPC and HUD Optics.
•Manage customer design changes and reflect to internal design deliverables and documentation.
•Interface with customer(s) to understand design requirements during the design specification/packaging development, and product development phases.
•Prepare Concepts and supporting data to meet optical performance requirements.
•Support the development of conceptual design, design feasibility studies for the RFQ response and technical presentations.
•Lead the development of DFMEA, Failure Analysis related to optical performance.
•Participate in customer reviews and translate customer requests into defining optical design specifications.
•Perform benchmark analysis, attend trade shows, and compile market trend analysis of optical design trends for HUD optics.
•Validate optical systems and achieve correlation to simulation models.
•Prepare technical documents in support of the optical design qualification for approval. Education, Experience and Knowledge
Required and/or preferred level of education, knowledge and skills that are necessary.
•Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Optical Engineering or Physics with specialization in optics; Master’s Degree in Mechanical, Optical Engineering or Physics with specialization in optics preferred
•2-6 years of automotive optical design & development experience.
•CAD Knowledge – CATIA / UG required.
•Knowledge of HUD optics preferred.
•Knowledge of Sequential and Non-Sequential ray tracing is required.
•Tolerance and sensitivity analysis of the optical system is preferred.
•GD&T and stack-up analysis knowledge required.
•Experience in Zemax, CODE-V, SPEOS or light tools preferred.
•Ability to read, write, and speak in Japanese preferred.
•Ability to influence Optical Design solutions towards achieving product technical excellence.
•Strong competency in all aspects of optics and optical component study and design related to similar products.
