Plant Engineering Data Specialist

Job Description

Job Summary

The position of Process Support Group (PSG) “Data Specialist” acts as the subject matter expert for all automated sortation process data, automates the capture of data, performs analysis on process data, develops reports, and monitors/enforces proper and efficient department use of server drive space.  The Data Specialist provides expert knowledge and develops the skills of the PSG Specialists, as well as providing general analysis support to PSG  – and the Plant Engineering (PE) department overall.  The Data Specialist works cross-functionally with other departments to obtain access to data, as well as provide data and reports to all levels of management.  This position requires excellent verbal and written communication skills, and the ability to consolidate, shape and analyze data from various sources into easy to understand reports and tools which simplify analysis by others.

The Data Specialist shall be responsible for:

  • Review reports for accuracy

  • Learn and understand the current reporting environments

  • Migrate reports and data from the current models to improved, sustainable models

  • Create new reports (web/Dream Report, Excel, Access, etc.)

  • Supporting legacy reporting systems until they are phased out

  • Facilitating the smooth transition to new reporting systems designed and implemented by the Data Group

  • Consolidation of data from various sources into the department’s SQL server/WW Historian

    • SQL databases and servers
    • MySQL
    • Excel files
    • MS Access files
    • Web pages
    • Other sources as needed
  • Develop equipment production and performance reports based on SQL and Wonderware Historian data

  • Wonderware (WW) Historian administrator

  • Modernizing department reporting methodologies and techniques

  • Proficient with Windows Scheduled Tasks

  • .bat files that are used to manage/copy/archive other files on servers

  • MS Access files that run autoexec macros to publish .pdf reports

  • Occasional general (department) user IT assistance (e.g. ODBC configuration and setup, MSOffice questions, VBA, etc.)

  • Monitor server drive space consumption for the department

  • Serve as the PE department contact person for server drive space consumption issues

  • Work with PE department users to reduce/eliminate duplicate files and only store files on the server that must be accessible from multiple locations/people

Job Responsibilities

Hardware:

  • Monitor for and communicate any server issues identified to the appropriate support group for timely correction

  • Develop contingency plans in the event of server hardware failures (Disaster Recovery)

  • Monitor server load and forecast future expansion needs

Software:

  • Maintain current versions of software on designated servers and workstations

  • Manage and guide the update of existing reports to incorporate changes in the physical plant equipment (add, update, remove) including all related roll-up aggregations

  • Support and maintain all reports currently in production

Training:

  • Ongoing development of PSG Specialists to increase their capabilities

  • Continuing personal development in database science, and data analytics

Miscellaneous Technical

  • Data and report project management

  • Primary point of contact for PE/PSG server and data issues, and coordination of support from the local Technology Support Group (TSG) and/or the corporate Advanced Technology Group (ATG)

  • Monitor servers and reporting systems, keeping management informed of issues and progress until resolved

Primary Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSA’s)

  • SQL & Report development project management

  • Single Microsoft SQL Server (2012)

    • DBA

    • Architect

    • Developer

    • Analytics

    • Administration

    • Security

    • Backup

  • MySQL (connect to, select from, monitor mirroring)

  • Microsoft Office Suite – including macros and coding in Visual Basic for Applications (VBA)

    • Strong emphasis on Excel and Access

  • Wonderware Historian & InTouch products

    • This can be learned, but must the successful candidate must already possess strong SQL database skills – prior experience is preferred

  • Minimum of Bachelor’s degree in engineering or technical field or equivalent experience.
