Process Safety Engineer

Job Description

Basic Function

The Process Safety Engineer II is responsible for evaluating the overall process safety risk profile of the La Porte site and developing and implementing plans to reduce the risk in a prioritized fashion.

The Process Safety Engineer will also be expected to work with company technical networks (e.g., Global and/or Extended Process Safety Network) and industry trade groups with an interest in process safety (e.g., ACC, AFPM, AIChE, Mary Kay O'Connor Process Safety Center, etc.) and identify best practices for incorporation within the site. The engineer may from time to time participate in Operational Excellence audits at other plant sites.

Roles & Responsibilities

Accountabilities and Responsibilities for this position include:

  • Participates on and responds to requests from the La Porte Process Safety Steering Team
  • Owns plant procedures associated with Corporate Operational Excellence standards, guidelines and preferred practices. Examples: Management of Change, Facility Siting, Process Hazard Analysis (PHA), and Process Risk Management.
  • Serves as a lead for areas owned by the position during Operational Excellence Self-assessments, Corporate audits, 3rd party audits and inspections by regulatory authorities.
  • Audit Management of Change (MOC) and implement improvements to the electronic system
  • Lead facility siting efforts including coordinating risk modeling with outside consultants, interpreting results, and working with stakeholders to comply with risk tolerance thresholds.
  • Evaluate incident data from the site on an annual basis and provide conclusions
  • Assists others in the PHA process for the site including QA/QC function for PHAs to ensure that all requirements are met
  • Reviews, monitors, and improves Process Safety KPI's for the site
  • Champions process safety knowledge sharing across the site
  • Communicates external process safety events to the site and share best practices identified within the company.
  • Occasionally coordinates or reviews the work of less experienced engineers or specialists
  • Occasionally serves as a lead external Operation Excellence auditor in other plants.

Min. Qualifications

Must possess a four-year BS degree in engineering. Chemical Engineering degree is preferred. Prior experience in the petrochemical or refining industry is preferred.

Candidate should have some familiarity with OSHA PSM regulations.

Candidate is expected to have performed MOC's and participated in PHAs.

Possesses good organizational skills.

Able to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.

The individual should be self-motivated and should be capable of driving their own work based on broad goals and objectives.

The candidate should have good written and oral communication skills with the ability to communicate effectively across all levels of the organization.

Must be at least 18 years of age.

Must be legally authorized to work in the United States on a permanent basis without visa sponsorship (U.S. citizen, U.S. Permanent Resident).
