My name is David Slaymaker and my company, Analysts/American Cybersystems is seeking to fill an exciting full-time Mid-Senior Systems Engineer position to support the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) at the Earth Resources Observation and Science (EROS) Center (http://eros.usgs.gov/). While the Center is located near Sioux Falls, SD, this is a REMOTE position.

The successful candidate will receive $125,000 to $135,000 (based upon experience/negotiable) to perform an integral commission for the Land Processes Distributed Active Archive Center (LP AAC, AAC,  https://lpdaac.usgs.gov), a National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) funded project by performing all facets of systems engineering for the USGS Landstat (a geospacial project's archive and access System.

Additional Background Information: The LP DAAC operates as a partnership between the USGS and NASA and is a component of NASA's Earth Observing System Data and Information System (EOSDIS). Data scientists, system engineers, user service representatives, and outreach staff work together to support LP DAAC activities  and distribute data to the science user community.

Job Requirements

Key Responsibilities:

  • The Systems Engineer (SE) will perform all facets of systems engineering for the USGS Landsat project's Data Processing and Archive System.
  • The SE will evaluate new applications, system requirements, developments in field of expertise, and evolving business needs to recommend appropriate solutions and alternatives.
  • Under general direction, the SE will use specialized knowledge or skills to solve complex and unique problems, or direct the daily activities of a development team.
  • The SE will establish priorities for the completion of assigned tasks.
  • The SE will use judgment to interpret internal and external issues and develop best practices.
  • The SE may direct resources and provide guidance to less experienced team members.
  • The SE will rely upon experience, interpersonal skills, and broad knowledge of field to ensure task completion in compliance with policies, procedures, and business strategy.

Required Skills:

  • Experience with the full Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC)
  • Experience working with or architecting Cloud solutions
  • Ability to understand and write requirements, operational concepts, interface control documents, integration and test plans, test cases, and other documentation
  • Ability to conduct trade studies for technology upgrades, hardware options, and software
  • Ability to plan and manage scope, schedule, and budget
  • Ability to prioritize and handle multiple tasks simultaneously
  • Ability to explain technical details and issues clearly to non-technical individuals and be able to explain system concepts and problems clearly and concisely
  • Ability to provide leadership and guidance on engineering aspects of the development and integration through system analysis and design, system integration and test, and decision analysis and resolution.
  • Ability to lead and interface effectively with other engineering staff of a multi-disciplined team, including strong interpersonal and team skills
  • Strong verbal communication and writing skills
  • Ability to participate in generation and presentation of milestone reviews
  • U.S Citizenship or prior 3 years residency in U.S - position is remote for now
  • Experience: Minimum 7 years system engineering experience
  • Education: Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science, MIS, Engineering, or equivalent

Good-to-have Skills:

  • Experience in image processing, data archiving systems, database management and design, software development, etc.
  • Experience using DOORS, JIRA, and Confluence
  • Candidates must have strong technical abilities, excellent communication skills, and a teamwork emphasis.
  • Candidates must also be able to integrate into a highly-skilled Information Technology Team.
  • The candidate must be able to obtain and maintain a national agency check and background investigation after hire to obtain a badge for facility access and user accounts.
