Software Engineer

Our client is a Machine Vision company. They are looking for a new software engineer to augment the current team of four, due to increased growth. This Software Engineer will be involved in programming software for multiple cameras to capture 6 sides of a parcel. It will take acquired images, read barcodes and evaluate the data. They also will working on a program to set up vision system to do single file sortation. The software and systems must then be integrated into much larger systems with their customers such as US Postal Service, FedEx and UPS. They do have a large amount of legacy code to work with (500,000 lines), so this will not be from scratch programming necessarily. Day to day work will include writing software, and debugging then traveling to do software testing at the customer site when
necessary.

Environment:

The work environment is very casual. The engineers wear jeans and t-shirts and sandals in the summer. Flexible hours (person must be there at core hours from 9:30-3:30 and get their 40 hours in a week). they leave at 2 on Fridays if you've gotten your hours in. Flat organization, not micromanaged. Family atmosphere. German owned company that has been operating in Louisville since the late 1990's.

Questions:
1. What is your C/C++ proficiency level? (Preference to someone who is self-driven enough to write any program for themselves and not only scholastic). Filter out anyone with only scholastic experiences. This person needs to have real world experience writing software.


  1. Do you have experience with multi-threaded programming? If not what is the most complex programming project you have tackled? How many lines of code were involved? What was the result?

  2. How much time would you say you have spent debugging code vs writing?

  3. How many programs have you written on your own? And what would you say your strengths are in programming?

  4. Are you self-motivated and customer-centric? We need someone we can provide the spec to and get a result. The Software team is available for reference, but not looking for someone that needs a lot of direction, rather someone who can see the vision and seeks resources until the job is complete.

  5. Are you willing to travel 10-20% for software testing in sites around North America and to the home office in Germany if needed (passport)?


Other Disqualifiers:
1. candidate who wants to be using the newest fanciest development tools. This will be primarily C/C++ programming and will utilize legacy code, not necessarily from scratch
2. candidates unwilling to travel, or unwilling to pitch in at times to help out other areas of a small growing organization
