Supervisor, Inspection

Job Description

Basic Function

This role is part of the Bayport Reliability Group supporting mechanical integrity and reliability improvement efforts. It carries responsibility for ensuring all stationary equipment mechanical integrity activities meet or exceed the requirements of local regulations, corporate inspection, engineering and maintenance standards, site inspection procedures, and the inspection workflow processes. The position interacts with other technical groups on site (process engineering, maintenance, and capital project groups), corporate technical networks and peers, and vendors/suppliers as needed to resolve mechanical integrity issues and improve plant reliability and performance.

Roles & Responsibilities
  • Reviews and manages site specific mechanical integrity procedures and practices to ensure compliance with industry and corporate inspection and maintenance standards
  • Provides cost tracking and forecasting of the inspection cost center and mechanical integrity programs
  • Manages site systems for inspection and maintenance of fixed equipment
  • Actively participates and cooperates in auditing and benchmarking activities of the inspection program
  • Audits the quality and completeness of inspection data in the inspection database and inspection files
  • Consults with peers at the site and across the company
  • Serves as a resource and conduit to share best practices and leverage operating improvement opportunities across the site and company
  • Provides technical support/expertise in the design and installation stages of projects for new assets and modification of existing assets to minimize life cycle cost and maximize asset availability
  • Participates in the development of design and installation specifications and commissioning plans of new equipment. Participates in the development of criteria for and evaluation of equipment and technical MRO suppliers and technical maintenance service providers. Develops acceptance tests and inspection criteria.
Roles & Responsibilities (Continued)
  • Proactively communicates inspection due dates, tracks compliance, and manages deferrals based on technical evaluation
  • Manages evergreen inspection schedules based on Risk Based Inspection (RBI) data
  • Ensures implementation and adherence to the inspection workflow process while proactively implementing improvements to the process
  • Ensures all inspection and NDE personnel performing work are properly certified and receive adequate training
  • Tracks, analyzes, and reports Key Performance Indicators (KPI's)
  • Leads or participates in incident investigations and root cause analysis
  • Manages risk to the achievement of an organization's strategic objectives in the areas of environmental health and safety, asset capability, quality, and production
  • Provide technical support to production, maintenance, project, and process engineering groups
  • Applies data analysis techniques to develop engineering solutions to repetitive failures and other problems that adversely affect plant operations including capacity, quality, cost, and regulatory compliance issues
  • Applies value analysis to repair/replace and repair/redesign decisions
Min. Qualifications

BS degree in Mechanical Engineering with a minimum of 5 years relevant experience in the refining, petrochemical, chemical process, or power generation industries is preferred. Strong interpersonal leadership skills are critical due to the requirement for effective communication of complex issues across the organization as well as for mentoring and consensus building. The successful candidate must exhibit an understanding of business drivers, management of change requirements, reliability processes, and maintenance and inspection workflow. The successful candidate must have strong commitment to safety, a high level of personal integrity, and dedication to conducting business in an ethical way.

Preferred Qualifications

The individual must have or develop basic proficiency and knowledge in the following areas with the ability to develop into a subject matter expert in particular areas:

  • Inspection and repair standards (API, ASME, NBIC and state/local regulations)
  • Inspection techniques, API/CWI inspections, and evaluating inspection results per industry codes and standards
  • Mechanisms leading to equipment failure such as corrosion, erosion, stress corrosion cracking, fretting, etc
  • Fixed Equipment design and maintenance (piping, flange make-up, pressure vessels, heat exchangers, etc.)
  • Component failure analysis
  • Fitness for Service analysis
  • Reliability Engineering concepts
  • Reliability data analysis techniques
  • Ability to apply computer software tools (SAP, Microsoft Office, Meridium)
