Purpose of the Position: Under general supervision, this position is responsible for investigating, analyzing and correcting problems of supplier parts to ensure the quality of these parts from the development phase through the end of the life cycle by collaborating in cross-functional partnerships within the company (worldwide) and with suppliers within the NAFTA region. In addition, responsible for expert level visual color matching and evaluation of exterior parts for supplier color Production Part Approval Process (PPAP) color sampling.

 
 
Essential Functions:  (List all basic responsibilities related to the purpose of the position)
 
Lead the Advanced Product Quality Planning (APQP) activities with the NAFTA supply base. Work with other Daimler plants and departments to assure Start of Production (SOP). Tasks include:
 
- Creation and alignment of the PPAP per the Automotive Industry Action Group (AIAG) and Germany auto industry
   standards (VDA) guidelines.    
- Conduct performance test
- Ensure series and new color quality is in specification with suppliers and plant
- Review trial parts
- Report part readiness for launch to management team
- Fixture & gauge concept and capability validation
- Supplier validation and development process
- Perform visual color checks/color readings of the exterior color sample parts with specified equipment.
- Launch new colors along with PPAP process.
- Conduct and evaluate appearance approval
- Manage vehicle actions within the yard
 
Provide lessons learned from current running series to improve future projects.
 
Perform Daimler Process Audits (VDA 6.3 part 2 and 3) at suppliers and monitor supplier performance to Daimler’s targets and standards.  Facilitate improvement plans using problem solving and continuous improvement techniques as required.
 
 
Manage international production part suppliers (in NAFTA region) in regards to quality concerns and change implementation. This includes communicating all part issues and coordinating countermeasure activities.
 
Ensure process planning and cross-functional activities to achieve the quality, safety and production goals of Daimler.
 
Frequently travel within NAFTA region.

 

Job Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS: Education, Experience and Necessary Skills all must be met in order to qualify for position.
 
Education:  Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering and/or the equivalent combination of education and experience
     
Experience: A minimum of 3 years of experience in Engineering within Original Equipment Manufacturing or a Tier 1 Supplier including PPAP and audit experience.
 
Necessary Skills, Certifications, etc.:  
Strong planning and problem solving skills using established methodologies including 8-D, 5-Why and root cause analysis
Ability to communicate complex topics into a cross-functional and cross-cultural environment
Capability of using hand measurement tools (i.e., calipers, micro-meters) and color system tools
Ability to differentiate the color spectrum – Certification of Munsell Hue Test
Experience with coating and paint applications
Working knowledge of Advanced Product Quality Planning (APQP) and Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA)
Expertise in exterior class “A” surface parts
Experience in leading task forces
 
Preferred Skills:
Working knowledge with AutoCAD, Catia, Coordinate measurement machine, CAD, Six-Sigma, VDA 6.3 as well as tooling knowledge
Foreign language skills – German or Spanish
