As part of a small, passionate and accomplished team of experts, you will help design and develop rocket engines and propulsion systems that meet Blue Origin's launch vehicle program requirements for various spaceflight systems. Being an expert in all types of heat transfer with experience in industry standard tools, you will directly contribute to the development of the most advanced liquid rocket engines being developed by utilizing good engineering judgment and creative analyses. You will participate in all stages of rocket engine development from conception through detailed design and test support.
As a turbomachinery expert, you'll be responsible for defining the best means of quantifying the thermal state and flow conditions within turbomachinery components and assemblies. You will own and guide the development of turbomachinery analysis processes while supporting the work of junior analysts. You and those you support will model simplified representations of primary components and secondary passages to insure seal performance and that axial rotor loads do not exceed bearing capabilities. You will also predict the thermal states of turbomachinery components and assemblies through extreme transients to aide structural and clearance analyses that affect performance.
Thermal and secondary flow design and analyses of rocket engine turbomachinery at varying levels of maturity and detail
Develop and maintain turbomachinery flow models suitable for design exploration and test support.
Develop test approaches to verify thermal/fluid predictions of turbomachinery components and assemblies
Advocate for methods that will improve component and analysis performance and reliability
Mentor junior engineers
Communicate with business leaders and external customers on thermal/fluid topics
Minimum of a B.S. degree in mechanical or aerospace engineering
10+ years of experience in thermal/fluid analysis with at least half working with turbomachinery
Ability to work effectively in teams
Ability to be self-directed and balance several tasks at one time
Ability to communicate analysis results and rationale to business leaders and customers
Experience using ANSYS for complex thermal analyses
Experience supporting liquid rocket development
Experience with in space thermal modeling
Experience using Thermal Desktop Sinda/Fluint or equivalent
Experience analyzing rocket thrust chambers
Experience analyzing cryogenic fluids in valves, heat exchangers, and pumps
Knowledge of at least one programming/scripting language (Python/MATLAB/etc)
